Whitelisting applications for a file or folder path can be achieved by adding exclusion rules to the containment. You can add as many rules as possible for excluding the application without running inside the containment.

  •  Go to Configuration Templates → Profiles, select the profile which is associated with intended group or device for whitelisting file or folder. In case, if the profile doesn't have containment section, click "Add Profile Section" on the profile and select "Containment".
  • For Example: Windows Profile for ITSM 6.5

  •  Containment section consists of the fields such as Settings, Rules and Baseline. In order to do whitelisting, one should create 'Ignore' rule.

Please follow below steps,

1.Define rule by selecting 'Ignore' from "Action" drop-down menu and then Click "Criteria" section on the Manage Contained Program.
2. Set "Type" as either File or Folder.
3. In the 'Target' option please set a required full path of file or folder.
4. If you want please define filters like "File Created by User(s):", "File Created by Process(es):", "File Origin(s)", "File Rate" and "File Age"
5. Click "Ok" Button and save the rule.

Example use case:

For whitelisting the particular file using containment on the endpoint,

In order to exclude network.exe application through whitelist, choose "Ignore" in action field.Add the Criteria with the "files" as a type, "target" path and click "ok" button. Then the file will be excluded on the endpoint.

Whitelisting File,

Whitelisting Folder,

For whitelisting the particular file using containment on the endpoint,

In order to exclude application folder through whitelist, choose "Ignore" in action field.Add the Criteria with the "folder" as a type, "target" path and click "ok" button. Then the folder will be excluded on an endpoint.

  •  Always make sure that created rule placed as first by enabling "Move Up" option for implementing the rules on the endpoint. Otherwise, the existing rules will override the new rules and it won't let the changes to be observed on the endpoint.

  •  Make sure that a device or group is associated with only one profile; if multiple profiles with containment sections are associated with a device, the rules will be overridden and the exclusion part may not work as you expected.
  • For Example: "Windows Profile for ITSM 6.5" is associated with device DESKTOP-175E2UI

  •  Please wait for 5 minutes to reflect the profile changes on an endpoint.
  •  As we have added "ignore" path to the profile, if the application executed means it will not run inside on containment. You can observe the results in Endpoint Manager interface within few minutes.
  • For viewing the changes in Endpoint Manager, goto Security Sub Systems → Application Control, here we can observe the changes that are applied through containment policy.
